Canapés — The term 'canapé' means sofa or settee in French - so traditionally canapés were little platforms of pastry or buttered, fried or toasted bread for tasty things to sit on. It now encompasses all kinds of bite-sized appetisers that can be eaten with the fingers, leaving the other hand free to hold a drink.
