It's traditionally spread on bread, but you can use tapenade in canapés or starters such as crostini or bruschetta, or you can stir a little into pasta dishes or sauces, use it as a marinade for meat and also for adding to casseroles and stews. It can be bought ready-made in jars.

There are several varieties to choose from, based on different types of olives and with the addition of extra flavourings such as peppers, anchovies or sun-dried tomatoes.
