Release information: The relinquishment of a right or claim against a person. When civil claims and cases are settled, the defendant (or paying party) generally wants a signed release from the plaintiff forever barring the claim from being reasserted against him. The lawyer should take care not to have his client sign a general release (one that releases all persons known or unknown) if there are other persons or entities that may be responsible for the client's damages.
