What is chiasma (plural chiasmata)?

chiasma (plural chiasmata) — A cross-shaped structure commonly observed between nonsister chromatids during meiosis; the site of crossing-over. X-shaped configuration seen in tetrads during the latter stages of prophase 1 of meiosis. They represent physical crossovers between DNA molecules.
