What is Letterboxed?

Letterboxed — Refers to a program that is presented in or close to its original aspect ratio. The aspect ratio compares the width of the picture to the height. Standard TV broadcasts and cablecasts use a 4:3 aspect ratio, while most movies are shot in an approximately 16:9 ratio.
