What is Smorgasbord?

Smorgasbord — An assortment of hot and cold dishes served in Sweden as hors d'oeuvres or as a full buffet meal. The name translates as 'buttered bread table'. A smorgasbord can include all kinds of things, such as potato-based dishes, salads, meats and cheeses, marinated salmon, meatballs, etc. A selection of herring specialities - fresh, salted, smoked and pickled - is a classic part of a smorgasbord.
