Some rehabilitation centers are residential, offering long term drug and alcohol treatment. Whether the treatment offered is long term or short term will depend on the results of a competent substance abuse screening and evaluation done by the rehabilitation center. In criminal cases involving substance abuse, and in drunk driving case, where the defendant obviously has an ongoing substance abuse problem, the attorney may refer the defendant client to a rehabilitation center for evaluation and intervention. Not only will the defendant gain the benefit of ameliorative treatment for the problem, he or she will also be able to prove to the sentencing judge (if convicted of the charge) that the defendant is maturely acknowledging and dealing with the substance abuse problem.
