- HYBRID VEHICLE
- Usually a hybrid EV, a vehicle that employs a combustion engine system together with an electric propulsion system. Hybrid technologies expand the usable range of EVs beyond what an all-electric-vehicle can achieve with batteries only.
- hybrid zone
- Geographical region in which previously isolated populations that have evolved differences come into contact and form hybrids.
- hybridization in situ
- Finding the location of a gene or gene product by adding specific radioactive or chemically tagged probes for the gene and detecting the location of the radioactivity or chemical on the chromosome or in the cell after hybridization.
- hybridize
- (1) To form a hybrid by performing a cross. (2) To anneal nucleic acid strands from different sources.
- hybridoma
- A cell resulting from the fusion of a spleen cell and myeloma cell. These cells can be cloned and maintained indefinitely in cell culture and produce monoclonal antibodies.
- Hydrate
- To add moisture to the skin.
- hydrazine
- a colorless liquid which burns rapidly and is used as a common rocket and missile fuel
- HYDROELECTRIC POWER
- Electricity produced by falling water that turns a turbine generator. Also referred to as HYDRO.
- HYDROELECTRIC SPILL GENERATION
- Hydroelectric generation in existence prior to January 1, 1998, that has no storage capacity and that, if backed down, would spill. This term also refers to a hydro resource that has exceeded or has inadequate storage capacity and is spilling, even though…
- hydrogen
- the simplest and lightest element; usually consists of just a single proton and electron; about 90 percent of the atoms in the universe are hydrogen
- hydrogen bond
- A weak bond involving the sharing of an electron with a hydrogen atom; hydrogen bonds are important in the specificity of base pairing in nucleic acids and in the determination of protein shape.
- HYDRONIC HEATING
- A system that heats a space using hot water which may be circulated through a convection or fan coil system or through a radiant baseboard or floor system.
- Hydroquinone
- A bleaching agent used in skin preparations.
- HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS
- Underground reservoirs that produce either dry steam or a mixture of steam and water.
- hydroxyapatite
- A form of calcium phosphate that binds double-stranded DNA.
- HYGAS
- A process that uses water to help produce pipeline-quality gas from coal.
- hymn
- A simple religious song in several stanzas, sung in a church service by the congregation.
- hypered film
- ilm that has been treated, usually with gas, to enhance its response to low light levels
- Hyperlink
- A part of the web page that links to another web page. By clicking on a hyperlink user redirects the browser to another page. The word hyperlink is sometimes shortened to just "link".
- Hyperlink information
- In internet issues, this is the linking word or document that moves the surfer from one page or provider to another.
- hypermorph
- A mutant with more than the normal amount of some gene product.
- hyperploid
- Aneuploid containing a small number of extra chromosomes.
- Hypertext
- A text on the web page that is linked to another webpage. Browsers usually display hypertext as underlined and in blue color.
- hypervariable locus
- locus with many alleles; especially those whose variation is due to variable numbers of tandem repeats.
- hypervariable region
- The part of a variable region that actually determines the specificity of an immunoglobulin.
- hypha (plural hyphae)
- A thread-like structure (composed of cells attached end to end) that forms the main tissue in many fungus species.
- Hypodermis
- Below the surface of the skin.
- hypomorph
- A mutant with less than the normal amount of some gene product.
- hypoploid
- Aneuploid with a small number of chromosomes missing.
- hypostatic gene
- A gene whose expression is masked by an epistatic gene.
- Hyssop
